Here is exactly where. You have thought it while staring at a payslip you could not fully decode. Every English speaker here has. It is not paranoia, and it is not an attitude problem. It is arithmetic, and it has an address.
Three places your money is sitting.
The frame is simple: money you already earned, years you can still reopen, and the price of having filed nothing.
Money you already earned. The events you already lived through, the job you changed, the child who was born, the degree you finished, the aliyah you made: each one changed what you truly owed in its year. Payroll did not catch it, because payroll cannot see your life. The difference did not disappear. It is recorded against your ID number, and it waits for a claim.
Years you can still reopen. A refund is not only about last year. Six closed years can be claimed at once, and for many people who check, the past is the biggest part: years they had mentally written off, still open on the state’s books. Nobody tells salaried employees this, because salaried employees are nobody’s client. That is the entire gap we exist in.
The price of having done nothing. You filed nothing. Reasonably: nobody told you filing was even relevant to a salaried employee. But in this system the refund does not come to you; you must go to it. Doing nothing has been a decision with a price, made by default, every year. The good news about a default is that it can be reversed in an afternoon.
